Mara Lee James

Eureka- Mara Lee James, 96, of Eureka, IL passed away at 10:45 am on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka, IL.

She was born on October 30, 1915 in Lewistown, IL a daughter of Bruce and Mildred Drake O'Brien. She married Russell James in June 1941 in Peoria. He preceded her in death as did one brother, James. She is survived by one sister, Charlotte Noe of Eureka, IL.

Mara Lee attended Lewistown High School and graduated from Eureka College where she was active and held leadership roles in a number of campus organizations including Delta Zeta Sorority.

She taught school for one year then worked as a draftsman at Caterpillar, Inc. for over 30 years. While living in West Peoria, she attended West Bluff Christian Church where she served as secretary. She also tutored adults in the Frank Lawback Reading Program.

Mara Lee enjoyed sports especially tennis and swimming. She and her husband enjoyed going to concerts and ballroom dancing. They traveled widely and vacationed in a number of states.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Maple Lawn Memorial Hall. Rev. Doug Hicks will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial of ashes will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Delevan, IL.

    Sorry to read of Mara Lee's passing. My father, Elmer Gury, was a good friend of Russ and Kinsey James. I often wondered where Mara Lee went after Russ died. Wish I had known. I remember the Christmas cards my parents received from them. In fact, Russ was a Godfather to one of my twin sisters. My sincere sympathy.
