Eva Merek

December 24, 1926 — February 27, 2018

Eva Merek, 91, of Putnam, formally Chicago, died on February 27, 2017 at Heartland Health Care in Henry.
Born on December 24, 1926 in Lida Belarus, her young orphaned life is obscured from history due to the wars that plagued Europe at that time. She was enslaved by the Germans until near the end of World War II. She met Tadeusz Merek and married him on September 16, 1945. He passed away on July 16, 1985.
Eva is survived by her son Andrew (Dolores) Merek of Lake Thunderbird, granddaughters Danielle (Rick) Horstman of Yorkville & Jennifer (Nick) Katsenios of Elburn, and four great-grandchildren: Ricky, Dale, T.J., & Anna. She was also preceded by her daughter Elizabeth.
Eva loved all of her dogs (especially Lucky). She had a passion for cooking homemade Polish Dishes like, "Pierogi, Stuffed Cabbage, and Potato Dumplings". Everyone loved her food! She had an incredible green thumb when it came to gardening and planting all sorts of wild and domestic flowers. Sharing both with family and friends gave her great joy. Her greatest joy however, was taking her grandchildren Danielle & Jennifer for extended summer field trips, visiting Grand Pa Merek at their summer cottage in Salem, and traveling to lots of interesting places, like "Holy Hill", in Central Wisconsin. Even in her later years, she frequently enjoyed fishing from the Dam site at Lake Thunderbird, and often went fishing for Large-mouth Bass at the Hennepin Canal with her son.
Cremation rights have been accorded and a Celebration of life will be held at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse on March 9, 2018, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., and the Saint Adalbert Cemetery Chapel in Niles, Illinois on March 14, 2018. Burial will be in Saint Adalbert Cemetery. Memorials can be made to a charity of your choice in Eva's name and on line condolences can be left at Lenzmemorialhome.com.
