Gerhardt Junker

September 13, 1921 — March 2, 2017

Gerhardt "Gary" G. Junker, 95, of Wenona, died on March 2, 2017 at his daughter's residence in Houston, Texas. Born on September 13, 1921 in Roberts Township near Varna, Illinois to the late Gustav and Hedwig Ollman Junker, he married Marguerite Loser in Varna on February 28, 1945. She died February 21, 1966. He then married Mary Lou Remley on December 30, 1967 in Peoria. She died on October 6, 1979.

Gerhardt was a farmer in the Varna and Wenona area for over 50 years and employed by Allen Lumber Company in Varna for over 20 years. After it closed, he then transferred to Allen's in Toluca where he retired in 2010.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was a past Trustee, Secretary, Usher and Sunday School Teacher. Gerhardt was also a member of the former Walther League and the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau.

In his high school years, Gary was a member of the basketball and track team and later enjoyed hunting and fishing with his oldest son, Don. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather and always had a smile or a kind word. His faith in Jesus was evidenced in the way he lived his life...a great man with a great heart, who worked hard and loved his family.

Gary is survived by: his sons Don (Kathy) of Magnolia & Dennis (Shirley) of Wenona; daughters Mary Ann (Steve Olson) Junker & Susan (Bill) Bartlett both of Houston; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. He was also preceded by 2 brothers and 6 sisters.

Services will be held on Friday, March 10 at 1 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Varna, with Peter Glock officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon and one hour before services at church. Burial will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery and in lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be left to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be left at lenzmemorialhome.com
