Harriet Ann Cowell, 70, of Lacon, passed away peacefully on June 17th at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on February 16th 1952 to Milo and Susan (Elburg) Moline. She was named after her Maternal Grandmother Harriet Elburg who passed away in 1933. She married Timothy W. Cowell on February 28th 1992. Tim & Harriet renewed their Vows on February 26th, 2022 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Chillicothe & Harriet was able to join the Catholic Faith.
She is survived by her husband Tim, her children R.Scott (Laura) Sutherland, Stacy (Dawn) Sutherland, Katey (Andy) Eberle, T.J. (Melinda) Cowell. Her brothers Milo (the late Ruth Ann) Moline, James (Pam) Moline, Pete (Julie) Moline. Sisters Wanda (the late Paul) Streitmatter, Sonja Sue Morgan and Linda Mooy
9 Grandchildren Shay, Ethan, Reese, Charlie, Milo, Olive, Rose, Magnolia and Tynleigh and 1 Great Grandchild expected later this year.
Harriet graduated from Mid-County High School, class of 1970.
Harriet dedicated her life to St. Josephs Nursing Home and volunteering. She won the Shining Star Award for Outstanding Social Services Staff in 2003 accepting the award at Navy Pier in Chicago. She loved her job and her motto was Love what you do & do what you love.
She was hired at SJH in October, 1972. She enjoyed her job. She worked as SJH/LRN as their Activity Director since October 2013 up to when she retired in 2021. She was just two months short of working 49 years of service.
She was an avid volunteer starting when she was in Junior High when she was a Jo-Jettes at St. Josephs Nursing home, Room Mother at both Sparland and Lacon, Sparland Brownie & Girl Scout Leader, Coached Sparland Summer Softball, Mothers Club, Booster Club, MEF, Picture Lady, Old Settlers Committee, Santa Parade Chairman, Kiddie Parade Chairman, Election Judge for Marshall County, Deputy Registrar at SJH, LA Chamber of Commerce Secretary, President, and Vice President, Second Sunday at the Stage Chair, Canoe & Kayak Committee, LA Community Board, Betty Cominsky volunteer award in 2009, Monthly Red Hat Society YaYa for 6 years Queen Chattie Hattie, Alzheimer Memory Walk Support Group Leader, started the first Alzheimer’s memory walk in Lacon at SJH and did the Alzheimer walk for 12 years, Alzheimer support group leader at SJH, Sparland Sesquicentennial committee – parade, telethon for MS and a Marshall County St. Jude Can Shaker.
Harriet had a deep love for her family and friends, she loved to laugh and appreciates the kindness everyone gave her. Harriet loved to be an Aunt starting when she was just 5 years old. Later in life she loved to be a wife, mom, grandma and great grandma.
Harriet was proceeded in Death by her Parents & one brother, Bill.
A Mass will be held at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Chillicothe on Wednesday June 22 at 10am with Fr. Matt Deptula officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday June 21 from 5-7pm at Lenz memorial Home in Lacon with Rosary at 7pm. Burial will be in the Lacon Cemetery and memorials may be made to St. Edwards Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception Altar and Rosary Society, or the Lacon Library.
