Eureka- Madeline June
(Fehr) Cawley, 89, of Eureka, Illinois died at 11:10 PM on
Sunday, July 14 at OSF Saint Francis Hospital, Peoria, Illinois
after a brief illness.
She was born June 14, l924 in
Eureka to Leonard and Sally (Ifft) Fehr. She married Dallas
"Cy" Cawley on July 20, 1945. She was preceded in death by
Dallas, her parents, four sisters, and one brother.
Madeline is survived by nine
children, Constance (Roland) Lundby of Denver, CO; Thomas
(Kathy) Cawley of Joliet, IL; Georgia (Joe Barry) Cawley of Long
Grove, IL; Janet (David Stern) Cawley of Rose, NY; Lynn
(Joe) McMenamin of Springfield, IL; Jeffrey Cawley of Rose,
NY; Carol (Bob) Bally of Eureka, IL; Mitchell (Sherry)
Cawley of Birmingham, AL; Bradley (Troy) Cawley-Hamm of Chicago,
IL; seventeen grandchildren, and nine
great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her
brother, Gene (Marge) Fehr of Eureka, IL; and sisters Eunice
(David) Beutel, and Carol (Alvin) Beutel, both of Tremont,
IL.
Madeline graduated from
Roanoke High School and Brown Business College in Peoria,
Illinois. She enjoyed working as a secretary and bookkeeper
and helped operate Cy's Superette with her husband in the early
years of their marriage. She loved serving the public,
meeting new people, and engaging in conversation. But most of all
she loved caring for her family.
As an active member of the
American Legion Auxiliary, she made over 80 quilts for veterans at
the Quincy and Danville Veteran Homes. She was still sewing.
Madeline was also a member of the Eureka Apostolic Christian
Church, Home Extension, and Sewing Club. She enjoyed beating
everyone at Scrabble, working cross-word puzzles, reading, writing,
and taking on any project as a challenge, such as teaching herself
to upholster furniture and tailoring suits.
Madeline had amazing
compassion and empathy for others. Many came to her for
uplifting conversation, encouragement, and counsel. She was a
steadfast spouse, committed friend, and loving mother to her nine
children, their families, and many others who called her
"Mom". She was dearly loved by everyone she met and will be
greatly missed.
Funeral services will be at
10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Eureka Apostolic Christian
Church. Church Ministers will officiate. Visitation will be from
4-8 PM on Tuesday, July 23, at Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in
Eureka and also 9-9:45 AM before the service at the church on
Wednesday. Burial will be in Olio Township
Cemetery.
