Ralph W. Appel, 88, of Lacon, passed away at Unity Point Proctor in Peoria on April 4, 2017.
Born in Sparland on May 2, 1928 to the late Henry and Marie Beck Appel, he married Doris Crank on May 15, 1948 in Lacon. Doris passed on July 30, 2007.
Ralph owned and operated Appel's Greenhouse and Sunset Lawn and Garden for over 60 years with his wife Doris. During that time he was a member of the Lacon-Sparland Fire Department, Lacon Chamber of Commerce and the Immaculate Conception Church.
Ralph is survived by; his daughter Kay (John) McMillen of Lacon; granddaughters Stephanie Piper of Lacon, Jill (Dave Kenyon) Piper of rural Sparland; grandson Adam (Carla) Schaer of rural Sparland; four great grandchildren Taylor, Kiryn, Kaitlyn, & Avery; son-in-law Lester Schaer of Lacon; step granddaughters Amy & Chris; five step great grandchildren; two step great great grandsons; and sister in law Fern Appel of Chillicothe. He was also preceded in death by daughter Karen Schaer, four brothers, and son-in-law Robert Piper.
The family would like to thank his caregiver Lisa, for taking great care and helping Ralph be able to spend quality time at home.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 8, at 10 AM at Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon with Deacon Robert Murphy officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday at Lenz with burial in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
